Annual Fund Strategy & Direct Mail Appeals

Annual appeals are a fundamental component of any strategic development plan. They are simple to execute and have a strong return on investment.

Here are 3 annual fund campaigns I managed, for organizations of differing sizes and scopes:

  • I’ve written appeals for small and large agencies that address food insecurity. One agency mailed 10 times a year, using variable data, testing, and a list of 20K donors. The other was a simple letter mailed to 1K donors twice a year. Both were very successful and lucrative for the organization.

  • When writing about beneficiaries in vulnerable positions, it is imperative to honor their stories with community-centric fundraising. I balance effective strategy with the highest concern for ethics and humanity.

  • Many patrons support arts and culture because they experienced the importance of your organization first-hand. These appeals emphasize the values they share with your organization.

Social Media Content Creation & Management

Social media is a powerful stimulus for conversions. Spirit and Thread’s website started with 15K visits and 42K pageviews. Sparked by thoughtful social media strategy and engagement, the website boasted 49K visitors and 131K pageviews in one year — an increase of 180%!

Here’s how I continue to leverage main social media platforms to make growth possible:

  • Instagram is the prime social media network for sharing visual content. User-generated images are readily accessible with tags, and hashtags help reach new audiences with shared interests.

  • Tik Tok is a fast-growing platform for primarily video content. Very popular among younger audiences, the best content is engaging, vibrant, and trendy.

  • Facebook’s users engage by following pages, joining groups, and sharing content with friends. It is a more demographically diverse platform, making it a great place to connect with a wide range of people.

Campaign Strategy & Fundraising

A powerful campaign is multi-dimensional. It taps into foundational values and beliefs, and it takes the consumer on a journey. It tells a story.

Browse my proudest career mental health fundraising & marketing campaigns:

  • The Walk is their largest annual fundraiser, involving peer-to-peer fundraising, sponsorships, and donations. In 2021, the Walk raised $100K revenue and had 800 participants. In 2023, just two years later, we raised almost $200K and had 1, 500 participants — an increase of 200%!

  • This grassroots awareness campaign used minimal funding and had an enormous impact. Using printed brochures, digital resources, and in-person trainings, the agency shared important mental health signs and symptoms, resources, and strategies with hundreds of businesses and agencies and thousands of community members.

  • The agency mobilized a strong network of community leaders committed to mental health awareness. Members united through their shared passion, and they were asked to promote the agency and it’s mission with their unique skills, experiences, and connections. The agency shared toolkits, invited members to exclusive events, and offered personalized opportunities for engagement and support.
